{"id":904,"date":"2016-06-22T07:59:13","date_gmt":"2016-06-22T07:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juanjomena.com\/?p=904"},"modified":"2016-12-05T14:58:04","modified_gmt":"2016-12-05T14:58:04","slug":"albeniz-orchestral-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juanjomena.com\/en\/discografia\/albeniz-orchestral-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Alb\u00e9niz: Orchestral Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chandos Records&#8217;\u00a0Spanish Music series (<em>La M\u00fasica de Espa\u00f1a<\/em>) with the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena, a specialist in the repertoire, now reaches the music of Isaac Alb\u00e9niz, one of the greatest Spanish composers of any era.<\/p>\n<p>Highly colourful and subtly contrasted, the\u00a0<em>Suite espa\u00f1ola<\/em>\u00a0is perhaps the most interesting early anticipation of the great piano collection\u00a0<em>Iberia<\/em>, composed about twenty years later, in which, as Debussy remarked, Alb\u00e9niz \u2018put the best of himself\u2019. Brilliantly successful though he was as a pianist and composer of piano music, Alb\u00e9niz also composed operas, having his first success with\u00a0<em>The Magic Opal<\/em>, in London, three orchestral movements from which feature here.<\/p>\n<p>The soloist in the\u00a0<em>Concierto fant\u00e1stico<\/em>\u00a0is the British pianist Martin Roscoe, already highly praised for his many past recordings for Chandos, on which he features with artists such as Tasmin Little and Jennifer Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Written at the same time as the Piano Concerto yet very different in style,\u00a0<em>Rapsodia espa\u00f1ola<\/em>\u00a0positively celebrates the Spanish idiom \u2013 all the more vividly in the orchestration by George Enescu, chosen for this recording.
